James KakaliosStaff and students are invited to attend the next Great Lives lecture, to be given by James Kakalios on The Physics of Superheroes on 7 September 2017.

Physics professor, bestselling author, and dynamic storyteller James Kakalios will bring the world of Physics to life in a unique talk using superheroes from well-known comic books to illustrate fundamental physics principles for young and old minds alike. The audience will be invited to ponder whether superhero, the Flash becomes heavier as he tries to run at the speed of light, the chemical composition of Captain America’s shield, and who is faster: Superman or the Flash amongst explaining other predicaments our most loved capped crusaders get themselves into.

James Kakalios is the Taylor Distinguished Professor in the University of Minnesota’s School of Physics and Astronomy where his research interests include nanocrystalline and amorphous semiconductors, pattern formation in sandpiles and fluctuation phenomena in neurological systems. However, his love of comic books and physics have catapulted him into the media spotlight after he wrote the popular science book “The Physics of Superheroes” which has been re-printed across the world and led to a second book, “The Amazing Story of Quantum Mechanics”. His most recent book, “The Physics of Everyday Things: The Extraordinary Science Behind an Ordinary was published in May 2017 and reveals the mind-bending science behind the seemingly basic things that keep our daily lives running, from our smart phones and digital “clouds” to x-ray machines and hybrid vehicles.

James Kakalios will be an Honorand at the University of Lincoln Graduation Ceremonies 2017 on Thursday 7th September 2017 where he will receive a Doctorate of Science.

The lecture takes place on Thursday 7th September at 5:30pm for 6:00pm lecture in the Isaac Newton Lecture Theatre.
