On Tuesday 24th October, Paul Leighton, Deputy Director of the NIHR Research Design Service, will give a presentation on Realist Evaluation.

Realist research methods (evaluation and synthesis) are increasingly popular in applied health research settings, and are more frequently being fu  nded by bodies such as the NIHR. This talk will use an on-going NIHR funded study to introduce and outline the principles and processes of realist evaluation. Using data generated from the FinCH trial (which tests the introduction of a falls management tool in care home settings) the various stages of realist evaluation will be described: from programme theory development to iterative testing of theory using primary data to conclusions about ‘what works for whom’. The talk will also touch on the foundations of realist methods in critical realism and the work of Pawson & Tilley, but will primarily demonstrate what it might tell us and how you might go about doing it.

The talk will take place from 10am until 11am in the Minerva Building in MB2601.
