Dealing with the media can be an intimidating prospect, but for many academics it’s also a valuable way of building your career.

These days being an academic involves so much more than teaching, research, and writing. Information is disseminated rapidly around the world and consumed in real time. This means increasing interaction with the media, but for many that can be a daunting experience.

This course seeks to allay such fears by providing an introduction to the mainstream media. You’ll receive practical insights into the news gathering process, with a focus on research news, together with an explanation of the potential benefits and risks associated with media engagement and how to manage both. The course will also offer advice on how staff can give effective media interviews, including tips on interview techniques, whilst providing real-world case studies and exercises to demonstrate the principles. It will also offer practical up-to-date insight into the relevant media laws and regulation.

The course aims to help staff enhance their understanding of how the mainstream media operates and build knowledge and confidence in interacting with the media. It is designed in particular to support staff who may wish to build their external profile through media appearances or coverage as expert commentators on areas of specialism, or by publicising research activities.

This course is suitable for all staff and has no necessary prerequisites. The next available session will take place on 23rd January 2018.
