Registration for the Newton Academy Science Club is now open for Year 6 girls.

The Academy was launched by the University of Lincoln in June 2014 as part of the University of Lincoln’s Athena SWAN project, acknowledging the Institution’s commitment to improving the representation of women in science, engineering, technology, mathematics and medicine (STEMM). It offers an exciting opportunity for Lincolnshire schoolgirls of secondary school age (year 7-9) to take part in projects and activities that will develop their confidence in, and enthusiasm for, STEMM subjects.

The Academy has now been running for four years and has been an amazing success. Over 120 girls have taken part in a number of workshops that have introduced them to many science disciplines and science-focussed careers, as well as aiding the development of their problem-solving, critical thinking and leadership skills. Our sessions have included ‘Spectacular Sports Science’ (a workshop hosted by the School of Sport and Exercise Science), ‘Rockin’ Robots’ (School of Computer Science), and ‘Banishing Bugs’ (School of Pharmacy).

The Academy is now registering its fifth intake of year 6 girls, and we are aiming to make the 2018-19 programme as exciting and inspiring as the last.
