Research carried out by Lincoln Music Academic Cassandre Balosso-Bardin has been selected as one of the top publications of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (JASA).

One of the world’s most important academic journals in acoustics published the article “Music in a bag? Controlling the bag of Majorcan and Galician bagpipes” in September 2017.

In 2016, after completing a PhD at SOAS, University of London, lecturer in music Cassandre Balosso-Bardin was hired as a postdoctoral researcher at Sorbonne University in Paris. She worked with an team of acousticians, ethnomusicologists and engineers on the one million-euro interdiciplinary research project GeAcMus (Gesture-Acoustics-Music) initiated by Professor François Picard (Sorbonnes Univerités) and Susanne Fürniss (CNRS) and scientifically led by invited professor Patricio de la Cuadra (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile) and Fabrice Marandola (McGill University).

Working within a unique interdisciplinary framework, ethnomusicologist Dr Balosso-Bardin carried out research on three projects including understanding the musician’s control of Galician and Mallorcan bagpipe bags, a project she brought to the team following her practice as a piper herself and her extensive research into bagpipes through a PhD on Mallorcan bagpipes and as the founder and director of the International Bagpipe Organisation since 2012.

Dr Cassandre Balosso-Bardin, who recently won with a unanimous vote the 101 Research Competition organised by the School of Life Sciences for Early Career Researchers, says: ‘As a researcher in humanities, it was a privilege to work within a different scientific environment, creating bridges that are too often left undisturbed. I was lucky to work with a fantastic international team on three stimulating projects, which allowed me to delve into the world of musical instruments in a different way than what I was used to.

Co-written with postdoctoral researcher Augustin Ernoult as first author and members of the Musical Acoustics laboratory at Jussieu, (Lutherie Acoustique Musique, Institut d’Alembert), including Professor Benoît Fabre, Professor Patricio de la Cuadra and Masters intern Ilya Franciosi, “Music in a bag? Controlling the bag of Majorcan and Galician bagpipes” was selected as Technical Area Pick of the year by the JASA’s musical acoustics committee. The article is available online for free download until 31 August 2018.

A sister article, “The Secret of the Bagpipes: Controlling the Bag.Techniques, Skill and Musicality”, published in The Galpin Society Journal in Spring 2018 with Dr Balosso-Bardin as first author, emphasizes the ethnomusicological and musicological aspects of the research and includes a statistical study carried out amongst 215 international pipers.
